OpenStudy (somy):

If the compound has 2 functional groups what will be the total pKa value of the whole compound?

OpenStudy (somy):

@Kainui

OpenStudy (somy):

example: \(CH_3OCH_2CH_2O^-\)

OpenStudy (somy):

-O- is ether - idk its pKa value T_T, i found it's pka value for when its protonated which is = -3.6 \(-O^-\) is from alcohol (deprotonated) i know normal alcohol's pka is ~15 but idk the deprotonated T_T

OpenStudy (kainui):

Well generally I think of extra electronegative groups as sort of drawing electron density away from other groups, so it should make the carboxylic acid more acidic. Since an ether is an aprotic group, it shouldn't really have its own pKa in general. For instance, when you have a grignard reagent (I don't know if you've gotten quite that far yet) they won't work if there are protic solvents around like alcohols or water, soyou need specifically ethers since they have no hydrogen to donate.

hmm i see thanx!!
