Is Krypton in the 5th energy level?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Level? Krypton is the planet superman was born on! Learn your comics kid :D

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the \(electrons\) in an atom of krypton are spread out over several principle energy levels. look at a periodic table and tell me what \(period\) krypton is found in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 4th period

OpenStudy (jfraser):

do you know the filling order for atomic orbitals? the aufbau principle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

OpenStudy (jfraser):

OpenStudy (jfraser):

do you know how many electrons can fit in each \(type\) of orbital?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first shell can hold up to two the 2nd shell can hold up to 8 the 3rd shell can hold up to 18

OpenStudy (jfraser):

technically yes, but the \(order\) that the shells and SUBshells get filled is more than that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh then I have no idea

OpenStudy (jfraser):

each type of orbital can hold a different number of electrons s-type can hold 2 p-type can hold 6 d-type can hold 10 and it goes on

OpenStudy (jfraser):

look at the image from earlier. When filling orbitals, we don't fill ALL the 3rd level before moving up to the 4th, so follow the red arrow when doing electron configurations
