OpenStudy (andu1854):

Logic Question: I need to write two equivalent sentences to the following: If the electricity is out, then I cannot use the computer. I got the following two sentences: If I cannot use the computer, then the electricity is out. The electricity is out and I cannot use the computer. I just want to make sure these two sentences are equivalent.

OpenStudy (freckles):

the converse isn't equivalent

OpenStudy (freckles):

the contrapositive is that is if you have if p then q the contrapositive is if not q then not p

OpenStudy (freckles):

also you could think about the statement not p or q being equivalent to p then q

OpenStudy (freckles):

p and q is not equivalent to p->q

OpenStudy (andu1854):

ok using the contrapositive: If I can use the computer, then the electricity is not out.

OpenStudy (freckles):

sounds good

OpenStudy (freckles):

now (not p) or (q) is also equivalent

OpenStudy (andu1854):

my second sentence: The electricity is not out or I cannot use the computer.

OpenStudy (andu1854):

thank you very much for your help

OpenStudy (freckles):

ok sounds beautiful

OpenStudy (freckles):

wait

OpenStudy (freckles):

p is i cannot use the computer not p is i can use the computer

OpenStudy (freckles):

@andu1854 it is a bit backwards

OpenStudy (freckles):

sorry i wasn't paying attention very well

OpenStudy (freckles):

If I cannot use the computer, then the electricity is out. p=i cannot use the computer q=the electricity is out ---- not p=? and q stays the same since we are looking at (not p) or q
