OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

If the formula for a compound is represented by \(XY_2\) and the charge on the Y ion is -2, what is the charge in the X ion?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Imagine the atoms as spheres of charge. |dw:1415711368910:dw| The charges need to balance (add to zero), if you have 2 \(Y^{2-}\), then overall they carry a -4 charge. This charge has to be compensated for by the X ion, so it must have a charge of +4.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

thank you so much! that is what i was thinking i guess i just forgot to put it up

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem !
