Find the elements sodium, oxygen, and phosphorus on the periodic table. Describe the monoatomic ions each would form. Then, given what you know about chemical bonding, describe and give the formulas for the types of ionic compounds they would produce with each other. Use the periodic table in the Chemistry: Problems and Solutions book to help with your answers. how do you solve this

i have no earthly idea

I don't know. I take biology not chemistry. Sorry! @iGreen Can you help?
Look at the periodic table, the groups the atoms belong to are indicative of the ions they form. For example, Oxygen is group 6, needs 2 electrons to "complete" it's valence shell, so it will carry a -2 charge. This will combine in 1:1 ratio with cations with a positive charge (e.g. \(Mg^{2+}\)) and in a 1:2 ratio with singly charged cations, (e.g. \(Li_2O\)).
i understand the periodic table but trying to solve it is the hard part i have alittle understanding of chemistry
Just know the way atoms are arranged on the table tell you what ions they form. group 1: +1 group 2: +2 groups 3 and 4 are iffy group 5: -3 group 6: -2 group 7: -1
ok so my main concern is what is this question asking me to do
Sorry, I'm a math person.
@JFraser
do any of you might know who can help me
@Katniss12345
each atom will form a particular kind of monatomic ion. Use the periodic table to figure out what kind of ion each atom would form
so all i have to do is look up each and see what they form
that's the first part.
the next part asks you to come up with the \(combinations\) of the ions that would create neutral compounds
how do you do that
first, find the kinds of ions that they each form. then it will be easier
The chemical formula for an ionic compound represents one ... Similarly, the Group 16 elements oxygen and sulfur form 2− anions, and ... on the other hand, each form 2+ cations as well as 3+ cations. ... TABLE 7-1 Some Common Monatomic Ions.
is that about right
what you've clearly cut and paste doesn't answer the question. What kind of ion does sodium form? looking at a periodic table should make it obvious
or am i missing somthing
ok sorry about that
Thanks How many carbon atoms does pentane have?
