OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

Similar: A ceiling fan can rotate 25 times per minute. The fan rotated a total of 3575 times. How long did the fan rotate? Solution: the fan takes one minute to rotate 25 times. So to find the time, you want to know how many twenty-fives there are in 3575. That's the kind of question that division answers! Divide 3575 by 25 and get 143. The fan rotated for 143 minutes. Now can you answer your question?

Chester has a coupon for 1/5 off the price of a shirt. If the shirt originally costs $31.10, what discount would Chester receive from using his coupon?

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

\[4051.08\div150.04=27\] The units of measure work out correctly, as well. \[rotations \div \frac{rotations}{minute}=rotations \times \frac{minute}{rotation}=minutes\]

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

Chester's problem: You need to find 1/5 of the original price, $31.10. To find 1/5 of a number, just divide it by 5. That will tell you the amount of the discount.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soooo

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

Can you divide 31.10 by 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes one sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6.22

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

Perfect.

The price of a gallon of gasoline is $3.15. The price when Ryan's mother started driving was 3/7 of the current price. What was the price of gasoline when Ryan's mother started driving?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u did not metal me

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

I'll do that shortly. Gas price problem: We need to find 3/7 of $3.15. You can do this in one step by multiplying 3.15 by the fraction 3/7. Here's a similar problem: to find 3/5 of $6.15, multiply \[6.15 \times \frac{3}{5}=\frac{6.15}{1} \times \frac{3}{5}=\frac{18.45}{5}=3.69\] The last computation is 18.45 divided by 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.69

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is 1.35

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

So to find 3/7 of 3.15 (back to your problem!), you do\[3.15 \times \frac{3}{7}=\frac{3.15}{1} \times \frac{3}{7}=\frac{9.45}{7}\] Finish it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.35

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u did not metal me

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

Doesn't that work in reverse? Don't people award medals to the ones who answer questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya but it will be nice

OpenStudy (ivycoveredwalls):

I'm sure it would be, but there's no way to do that. You get medals when you answer someone else's question!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u can metal me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will un metal u

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

??

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Open Study is to learn not just get medals. And since you are new here I would advise you to look at this. http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/543de42fe4b0b3c6e146b5e8 Also it is medal not metal. xD :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also it is about not giving answers but helping how to get the answer!
