Will give medal! How can you describe the location of magnesium (Mg, atomic number 12) on the periodic table? A. nonmental B. metalloid C. Group 2, Period 3 D. Group 3, Period 2 My Answer: B ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, c. It is like this: Given the proton number of Mg is the same as electron number, which is 12 and you perfom the electron configuration, having 1s^2;2s^2 ; 2p^6 ;3s^2. The number that comes first in every configuration is the quantum number, which determines the period and that is based from the last one in your configuration and on this one was 3, therefore it is on period 3 and to find the group, you have to sum the number that comes after the letter, but of the same quantum number. In this case we have the 3 once and it has 2 electron, therefore it is in group 2. Please medal.
