I have a problem with a square, length 8 meters, and a circle, diameter 4 meters. It wants me to subtract the square's area minus the circle's area, but I keep getting a negative number! The answer should be 13.76 and I have to show my work. Help?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Please show your work so that I can help spot where you may have made a mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 32 meters squared for the square, then 50.24 meters squared for the circle. Then when I subtract them I got - 18.24 meters squared.

OpenStudy (jj123.3):

you got one of your numbers try works with the answer to get the numbers then subtract the numbers to check your work on getting 13.76

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It just looks like both of the areas are correct

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

how did you get 32 for the area of the square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if the length is 8, then 8 + 8+ 8+ 8= 32, right?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

No - what you have calculated is the perimeter of the square (i.e. the distance all the way around the square). The area of a square is equal to its sides length multiplied by its side length (i.e. the square of its side length)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Similarly - how did you calculate the area of the circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1417633054790:dw| the difference between the areas, 13. 76 M2, is supposed to represent the scribbled area
