Can anybody help me... I will give medal and fan you.. These are the question... 1. How are kidneys like a water treatment plant? 2. Why would certain substances in the urine(protein, sugars, blood) be an important diagnostic tool for the medical community?

1. Kidneys are like a water treatment plant because they sieve out what the body does not need or what it would term as 'dirt', the same thing a water treatment plant does. In the kidneys, you would have particular stages with particular elements that get rid of particular unwanted material which is a similar scenario to what water treatment plants have (particular stages of sieving out unwanted material using particular purifying elements). The only difference you would have perhaps, is the fact that in kidneys, what is still needed in the body is absorbed back into the blood stream within the blood vessels within the kidney and what's not needed remains in the PCT (Proximal Convoluted Tubule) and the DCT (Distal Convoluted Tubule) and ends up in the Collecting duct then the renal pelvis then to the ureter then eventually the urinary bladder; while for the water treatment plant, what's unwanted is removed from the system and we end up with clean water at the distribution terminal. 2. For the second question, I think urine speaks a lot about your health. As I explained in the first question, the purification section of the kidney (known as the Bowman's Capsule) keeps unwanted stuff within the tubes that drain out 'dirt' (that includes the PCT, DCT and Collecting duct) from the kidney. Around the tubes are thousands of blood capillaries that absorb useful stuff from the matter being purified; that includes proteins, sugar, etc. A normal biologically functioning human body would have absolutely no useful materials in their urine, so if any of these useful stuffs or rather elements that the body considers useful (like proteins, sugars and even blood) end up in your urine, that definitely says something worrying about your health. And that's why your urine is a useful tool for health diagnostics. Hope these answers are helpful. It's been quite a while since I did biology in high school so this is a bit of what I remember.
