Valance electrons are electrons which are found in the outermost energy level of the element. Helium has only 2 electrons, so both are valence electrons. Lithium has only 1 valence electron. The first ring of electrons is only able to have a maximum of 2 electrons, and lithium has 3. The remaining electron is carried over the the outermost energy level, making it a valence electron. Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. Magnesium has 2 valence electrons.

^good answer. Group number minus 10 for most of them is the number of valance electrons.
