"p varies directly as q" So that means \(p = kq\), where k is unknown constant. We need to find k first. We know that \(p=8\) when \(q = -3\) So you have \(8 = -3k\quad\Longrightarrow\quad k = -\dfrac{8}{3}\) So now you have equation \(p = -\dfrac{8}{3}q\) Plug 12 into p then solve for q.
