what is the relationship between proton electron and neutron in an ion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An ion is basically an atom which has an unequal no. of electrons to the protons in its nucleus which results in the atom being charged(+ or-). The no. of protons is always the same but electrons can be removed (1,2 3 at most) or added(1,2,3) If electrons are added the atom becomes an ion with a negative charge and if removed it get a positive charge as electrons carry negative charge protons carry positive. In a normal atom the number of electrons and protons are equal. Neutrons carry neutral charge so they dont affect the charge on an atom

Hope this helps!! :)
