Which of the following is a single replacement reaction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CaO + H2O yields Ca(OH)2 Mg + 2HNO3 yields Mg(NO3)2 + H2 NaOH + HCl yields H2O + NaCl CH4 + 2O2 yields CO2 + 2H2O

OpenStudy (kainui):

What do you think the right answer is? Single replacement sounds like it means that one thing is being replaced, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is either A or B, is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kainui is it?

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

a synthesis reaction usually has 2 or more reactants and 1 product which eliminates a few of these

OpenStudy (kainui):

Wriddler you are on the right path, however the difference between these two reactions is one is called a single replacement while the other is called a synthesis. The difference is that in a synthesis you have two things coming together to form one thing while in a replacement you have two things to begin with and two things in the end, however one of the molecules has replaced partners.

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

yes

Awesome, thanks!
