Ok. so to solve this by substitution. you have the equations y=-2x+8 y=x-1 now substitution means you must get one variable out the way. so i'd take the 2nd equation and make it x=y+1 now plug that x value to the first equation to get y=-2(y+1)+8 that equates to y=-2y-2+8 which equates to 3y+6 now you have y=2 plug that into the 2nd equation 2=x-1 x=3 (3-1=2) y=2, x=3
