A music competition on television had five elimination rounds. After each elimination, only half of the contestants were sent to the next round. The table below shows the number of contestants in each round of the competition: x 1 2 3 4 5 f(x) 64 32 16 8 4

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

Compute the average rate of change of f(x) from x = 3 to x = 5, and describe what it represents. -6 contestants per round, and it represents the number of contestants who will reach the final round -28 contestants per round, and it represents the number of contestants who will reach the final round -6 contestants per round, and it represents the average rate at which the number of contestants decreased from the third round to the fifth round -28 contestants per round, and it represents the average rate at which the number of contestants decreased from the third round to the fifth round

@borak @iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi you calculate the average rate of change , or slope on the two points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\Delta{y}/\Delta{x}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have the two points (5,4) and (3,16)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you use the formula you will get = > (4-16)/(5-3) = -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is it represent is :- the average of decreasing on the competition

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

i kind of don't get it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you draw a linear function from the two point's ; the slope = -6

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

oh, okay !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let's explain more further :D ? if you check in the result form x=3 to x=5 it's lost 12 person

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you have 2 points from x=3 to x=5 which describe the num of competition , the average of losing is the slope; 12 person losing / 2 compettion s= 6 person lose per compettion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

losing mean (-6);

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

alright !

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

does that mean that it's C, though ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

https://www.desmos.com/calculator/j75taamjda this is graph to function + the linear function I described

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea the answer is C

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

thank you !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

check the function more detail :D
