Can someone please draw me a DNA model then label each material and the part of the DNA molecule it represents!?
that's kind of a difficult request. It might be easier for you to find a model and ask what each part of the model represents.
Okay I'll try to find one. Thank you. @1DEA
no problem if you look one up and ask about it I'll be glad to help.
I'm actually asking for my brother. He is suppose to make a DNA model out of straws, pushpins, paper clips, and a black maker to make dots. Then they want him to label each material and what they represent. When I was in high school I passed biology but it was one of the hardest things I ever done so we are both pretty much stumped when it comes to doing this. @1DEA
I could attach the assignment if that might help..?
ahhh I see that make a lot more sense...hmm ok lets see how I can clarify how you would make a model. Btw your brother is in high school? And YES! that would extremely helpful.
hmm ok so this assignment doesn't actually tell you how to make the model...Has your brother already made the model? Because according to this Lab Assignment he should have already done so.
No that is what we are having problems with! We are not understanding how to make the DNA model or what any of it represents and we can't ask his teacher because it is winter break and if he doesn't have it completed by the end of winter break he gets a 0 no exceptions. @1DEA
I was just hoping someone on here might be able to draw a quick sketch of a DNA model showing what each piece represents.
OK I see I'll try my best to explain a model I found on google. I don't know how much you want so if something is confusing or what-not let me know.
do you see that image in the link?
Ya
the grey ribbon like things in the picture are what is called the sugar-phosphate backbone of the DNA helix. Like the name implies it is made up of two components, a sugar - specifically a sugar called deoxyribose, and a phosphate group which chemically looks like this: http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/P/Phosphate.gif now each of these rungs between the two ribbons are the bases of DNA. Of which there are 4 and each are represented by a different letter: A is for Adenine T is for Thymine G is for Guanine C is for Cytosine
what is the easier way?
Okay so the straw would represent the backbone. The push pins would represent the bases or A, T, G, C. Then what would the paper clips & the black dots represent?
Right? @1DEA
well maybe...honestly I couldn't tell you what they are unless you gave me a pic of the model or instructions on how to build the model. The straw sounds like it would represent the background and it does make sense that the push pins would be the bases, especially since you could have different colored pins representing different bases. However, that all that is DNA is really made up of. So unless they are making the paper clips into the sugars and the black dots as the phosphates. I wouldn't know what to do with them.
Of course there are other things in DNA but they are not things that a high schooler is expected to know/model. So I am bit perplexed.
OMG that's a great picture!
yes! so the straw and paper clips represent the sugar-phosphate backbone and the pushpins are the bases which each color representing a different base.
Alright good! Oh & I am sorry this is taking so long! He just came to me today asking if I could help him telling me he has 3 days to do it & it is already over due so I am lost.
Do you know where he drew those dots? And no problem you are actually a great sister (at least I think you a girl by you profile pic)!
He hasn't drawn them yet. Any suggestions on where he should? Also I am his sister so no worries lol.
I think he should draw them on the straw to either represent the phosphate specifically or the negative charge of the backbone created by the phosphate group. I would lean towards them being the negative charge, but it's just my guess at the end of the day.
Alright well thank you so much! If you are still in high school or college and you ever need help with anything in world history, geography, & etc. please feel free to ask! Them type of subjects are a breeze for me! @1DEA
lol I am in grad school but if I have any questions I will ask. Btw though if they are the charge he should draw them on only one side of the straw and only one for each straw piece.
Okay thank you!
and lastly he needs to make sure that the strand are anti-parallel to one another aka the go in opposite directions.
