3. Jerry has two part-time jobs, one at a grocery store and one at a sporting goods store. He is paid by the hour at each job. Last week, he worked 10 hours at the grocery store and 12 hours at the sporting goods store and earned a total of $168.00. The week before, he worked 14 hours at the grocery store and 8 hours at the sporting goods store and earned a total of $167.00. a.) Determine how much Jerry earns per hour at the grocery store. Show all your work. b.) Next week, Jerry wants to earn at least $184.00. He is scheduled to work 8 hours at the grocery store. Write and solve an inequality to find the minimum number of hours he needs to work at the sporting goods store in order to earn at least $184.00. Show all your work.

I can help :) Remember to use the problem solving strategy

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I can help too if needed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks @horsegirl27 , yes you can help. One is better than two :)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

So do you understand any parts of it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, I don't know how to do it :/

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

ok so lets start with part a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay :)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

so (I know you already probably read this) we need to find how much he earns per hour..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay!

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

so what you need to do is find out how much he earns at the sporting goods place and at the grocery store. He worked a total of 44 hours and earned a total of $335

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So Divide?

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

to answer part a we need to find ho much he earned at each separate place per hour ok? so do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I'm pretty sure you divide because it's what makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I'm going to help you to the best of my ability so if I get it wrong don't be mad because I'm only in 8th grade. Taking honors high school math for 10th-12th graders

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow! I wont dont worry im a junior and don't know how to do it so any help counts!

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

So try dividing and lets see what you get. We will try as many ways as needed to get the answer it's what I do when I don't know how to do a problem

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

After all, it's just the same thing with harder numbers when you get older

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 7.61363...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

ok that doesn't seem right let me try something...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you need to multiply...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We could call @igreen

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

wait ok I figured it out one second

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

let me try one more thing and I think I might have gotten it don't trust me though lol I just want to check something I'm pretty sure I know how to do this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay :)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

wait what math is this that will help me know if I'm right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Algebra 2

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

ok.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Ok I'm really sorry but I've tried like 3 things 5 ways and no answer makes sense. Let's ask @iGreen sorry I tried but couldn't help I might be able to help on other things in the future though ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thanks again! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@texaschic101 Can you please help?!

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

yep your welcome sorry I wasn't much help. But here's a tip: just keep trying new ways. And do as @ReadytoLearn_Student said^^^^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will!

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

the four steps. Ok good luck on this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

You can ask @ReadytoLearn_Student to help I think they knew how to do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1420728251237:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand how to do the problem, that's the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

our first step is to understand the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand what they are looking for? Are there words you don't know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand the words, I don't understand how to do the problem.
