What is the area of the actual bathroom in square feet? Round your answer to the nearest whole number. 7 ft2 19 ft2 12 ft2 140 ft2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@freckles please help me :)

OpenStudy (freckles):

the bathroom is a rectangle it looks like the area of a rectangle in the picture is a*b but it says the scale is 1:20 so the actual area of the bathroom is 20*a*b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so then i multiply and get the answer?

OpenStudy (freckles):

a and b are to be replaced by 2 and 3.5

OpenStudy (freckles):

well and multiply the area of the rectangle in the picture by 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so then the answer is 140ft2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct?

OpenStudy (freckles):

well not so fast

OpenStudy (freckles):

the units in the picture are inches

OpenStudy (freckles):

so we have 140 inches squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh... :)

OpenStudy (freckles):

we need to convert the inches square part into feet squared

OpenStudy (freckles):

since all the choices are given in the feet squared units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 11.66 but we round it to 12, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i looked that part up in a calculator ;0

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[140 \text{ inches }^2=140 (\frac{1}{12} \text{ feet })^2 =140 \frac{1}{144} \text{ feet } ^2=\frac{140}{144} ft^2\] I wonder if the choices have the wrong units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know, i just copied and pasted the question...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the answer is c... 122

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12 ft2*

OpenStudy (freckles):

1 foot =12 inches 1/12 foot =1 inch 1 inch=1/12 foot multiply both sides by 3.5 gives 3.5 inch=3.5/12 foot multiply both sides by 2 instead gives 2 inch 2/12 foot So we have the area in the picture is \[\frac{3.5}{12} ft \cdot \frac{2}{12} ft =\frac{7}{144} ft ^2 \\ \text{ multiplying by 20 gives } \frac{140}{144} ft^2=\frac{35}{36} ft^2\] I think there is a mistake.. because this is none of the answers If we had pretended the units in the picture were in feet then D would be the answer

OpenStudy (freckles):

but if we don't pretend that part then none of these are the answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but... the calculator said that if we converted the 140 inches into feet then it would be 11.66. And the question says to round so then wouldn't the answer be 12ft2?

OpenStudy (freckles):

are you converting 140 inches^2? 140 inches=140/12 feet which would be approximately 12 feet 140 inches^2=140/12^2 ft^2

OpenStudy (freckles):

you can't pretend inches^2 is the same as inches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh..

OpenStudy (freckles):

35/36=.9722

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, so then what should i put?

OpenStudy (freckles):

well if you can put none of these that would be correct

OpenStudy (freckles):

if you pretend the units in the picture are feet instead of inches then your answer is D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok:P there must be a mistake in the picture then. thanks sooo much! i gave you a medal and i became your fan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wrong, i just submitted the test

OpenStudy (freckles):

if you can let your teacher know that there is mistake in units on the picture for this question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well :( nah ill reset it thx anyway:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how do i solve this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? * 5.5 * 3

OpenStudy (freckles):

same way 3 in*5.5 in*30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30 * 5.5 * 3?

OpenStudy (freckles):

yep that will be in in^2

OpenStudy (freckles):

since in*in=in^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

enlarge by a scale of 1.50

OpenStudy (freckles):

find the area of the rectangle and multiply the result by what is it being scaled by

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the total area in feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh..

OpenStudy (freckles):

it is the same as the previous questions

OpenStudy (freckles):

except this one is in feet

OpenStudy (freckles):

so your unit measurement will be feet squared

OpenStudy (freckles):

for the area that is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah. thanks a lot freckles :)

OpenStudy (freckles):
