question

OpenStudy (beccab003):

@DanJS

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Identify the number that needs to be added to both sides of the equation x^2-10x=-24 to complete the square. okay...what does it even mean by "complete the square"?? do I just solve for x or what?

OpenStudy (danjs):

it means basically , make it so you can factor it

OpenStudy (danjs):

x^2 - 10x + ___ = -24 A = 1 B=-10 take half of B and square it

OpenStudy (beccab003):

OH! I can factor it!!! but can I move -24 to the other side of the equation?

OpenStudy (danjs):

i think it doesn't want you to do that. keep it how it is, and complete the square on the left side

OpenStudy (danjs):

the term to add to both sides is \[[\frac{ B }{ 2 }]^2\]

OpenStudy (beccab003):

okay. So take have of b...-5 and square it? that isn't a whole number though.

OpenStudy (danjs):

right, (-5)^2 = 25 add 25 to both sides

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Oh. that makes so much more sense. so it ends up to be 1=1

OpenStudy (beccab003):

sorry -1=1

OpenStudy (beccab003):

so the number is 25 that needs to be added to both sides?

OpenStudy (danjs):

x^2 - 10x + 25 = -24 + 25

OpenStudy (danjs):

then the left can turn into (x-5)^2

OpenStudy (danjs):

completed the square

OpenStudy (beccab003):

k. now one more? real fast. last one that's giving me a hard time.

OpenStudy (danjs):

k
