Remains of Hydrothermal Structures At the Haughton impact crater in Canada, researchers discovered what appeared to be the remains of hydrothermal structures. These would have been steaming vents at one time, releasing heat that would have made life more sustainable in the cold climes of planets like Mars. An impact even onto a frozen planet would create a local hot spot in the crust. It would melt any frozen water in the ground and fracture rocks. It would create ideal conditions for types of microbes known to need only rocks and liquid water to survive. The crater would also be a natural place for a lake to form. It would leave behind sediments with evidence of such early life. Large craters could take up to a million years to dissipate their heat. That's a geologically significant amount of time, especially for microbial life.

Jack wrote a report about the number of students in his school who have computers at home. In his research, he found that 206 students out of 242 had home computers. Out of the other 36 students who did not have home computers, 18 said that they used the computers at school, 10 said that they used a friend's computer, and 8 reported that they used computers at the local library. In Jack's report, he included the graphic below. How does the chart aid the reader's understanding of the passage? It shows that numbers can be confusing when read. It points out how many people live in Jack's small town. It clarifies the information by organizing it in a graphic. It illustrates how many students do not use computers.
