There are 24 boys and 20 girls in a chess club last year. This year the number of boys increased by 25% but the number of girls decreased by 10%. Find the overall percent change in membership of the club.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

interesting..I need the asnwer also!

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Will it be 30 boys?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

And how many girls?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

And 22 girls?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you are subtracting 10 percent. no

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Oh sorry 18 girls?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yes, 18 geirls

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So, you had last year: 44 people overall. You have now: 48 people overall.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

48-44/44 x 100?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, if you mean it as, \(\large\color{slate}{ 100\times~~~~(48-44)/44 }\)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Yes.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

your answer is?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

about 9%

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, correct.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Round your answer to whatever you need, a whole number, 1 tenth, or whatever the teach wants....

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I have another question.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Sure,

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Determine the length of time it will take to double a principal of $100 if deposited into an account that earns 10% simple annual interest.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

+10% will be one year, to double you need to make it +%100 (and +100%, will be in 10 years)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So with a +10% simple interest each year should be doubling the principal in 10 years regardless of what the principal amount is.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I don't really understand.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

sure, so lets say you got any principal, call it 100. (To know that it is 100$ isn't important) This entire principal is 100%. To double the principal you need 200% (of the entire principal). (correct?) You add 10% each year. (It is a simple interest of 10% so that is what you do) To double you will have to add 100%. In how many years will you add 100% percent?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

10 years?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yes

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So it will take 10 yrs rights?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Okay thx

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

If 1 year you add 10% more. (So after year 1, you have 110% of the principal) After 2 years you have added 20% (So you have 120% of the principal) and on... After 10 years you have added 100% (So you have 200% of the principal) To have 200% of the principal, means double the principal.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
