"I had not realized this at that time. " Is this sentence grammatically correct ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm I think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, the answer says NO ? I dont know why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe it should have specified what the subject/main idea was of the sentence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it isnt right because it isnt a complete sentence and it doesnt sound right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, it looks correct to me. @MaimiGirl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thought so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain why @pizza12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyone can say "I didn't realize this is at that time" It could mean secrecy of a group

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can explian

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't feel like being taught this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AnimeWover I know what u r saying. I was confused for the same reason. But the answer is correct. I double checked it. The ans is NO . I seriously dont know why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh dear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pizza12 are u there ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u were gonna say that then u would need to add to the end of the sentence before "I had not realized this at that time. " after "i had not realized tha mistake the first time i read it." it is not a complete sentence the other way it was wrote.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But, consider " I had not realized this " and "at that time" Those sound ok if they r separated then why r they incorrect when they r together ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pizza12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Directrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because they dont sound right together

OpenStudy (perl):

I had not realized this at the time.

Directrix (directrix):

Did the quotation marks come with the original problem or did you add them? @MaimiGirl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I added them The original sentence is " I had not realized this at that time "

Directrix (directrix):

>>I had not realized this at the time. But, what is the grammatical error? @perl

Directrix (directrix):

What is the antecedent noun for "this?" Is the sentence part of an essay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and "this" is referring to something in the previous sentence. I'm sure about that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer explanation just says verb issue

Directrix (directrix):

My thinking is that the "issue" had to do with the tense of "had realized" and especially the "had." Without reading the entire paragraph or essay, it is difficult to know what the error might be.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do not have the entire essay now :(

OpenStudy (perl):

"I had not realized this at that time. " should be changed to " I did not realize this at that time" or "I did not realize this at the time"

Directrix (directrix):

@MaimiGirl My thinking written above is a conjecture. In short, I don't know without the essay. @perl If there is a grammatical error, then that error has a name. That name is what I would like to hear. I don't think the question is about how to rewrite a given sentence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay @Directrix Yep I think that makes sense @perl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks :D

OpenStudy (nevermind_justschool):

Hey, if you got the answers you need, please close the question :)

Directrix (directrix):

@MaimiGirl Verbatim Commentary from @Grammar_Phone_A_Friend The sentence sounds right, but it's probably grammatically incorrect because it uses past perfect. A past perfect sentence usually conveys that one action happened before another. A proper past perfect sentence might say, "I had not realized this when I started the class." Her sentence is probably wrong because there's no prior action taking place. A past tense verb ("I did not realize...") sounds more correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay. Thanks a lot @Directrix . I really appreciate that :)
