Influences of Technology on Self-Expression Too many people in this generation link technology as their only means of expressing themselves. It is funny how friends have to disconnect to reconnect nowadays. Being stuck on twitter, facebook and email all the time may seem like a social party, but this is not the case. You are alone on the computer. I believe, technology in the form of social networking has shifted the way we express ourselves. Take for example my friend whose name I will not mention. My friend will, on occasion, send me an extreme amount of up to 50 texts a day. This will happen even when I explain that I am unavailable. Technology has advanced so much that everything is instantaneous. Back in the day, my parents told me that to communicate with someone it could be done by talking to them directly, writing them a letter or calling them on the phone. There wasn’t any opportunity to leave an extra message such as a voicemail or text. Ever since my friend was introduced to social networking such as SMS my friend’s identity has changed dramatically. The occasional ‘let’s get together’ is now an out of control barrage. Expressing yourself can be a wonderful aspect that shows communication and social skills. However, always expressing ourselves through social media isn’t the same as talking with a person face to face. Having an online social networking account can allow people to create their own ‘identities’ on the web. These accounts allow a person to post all kinds of things from age to photos of daily activities. A negative aspect of social sites is that people can post things that aren’t true, they are creating a fake identity which can potentially be dangerous. For example, my father was helping an employee set up a skype account. While training, an unknown friend request from a Middle Eastern country popped up and the employee immediately accepted even though this person was unknown. When questioned, the employee stated that “I need a new friend”. This is a perfect example of how people fill their identity needs through expanding technology in social networking. Twenty to thirty years ago friendships were primarily dependent on relationships established through personal contact. As people met one another, got to know one another and share experiences the trust was built for a solid relationship. Today, making ‘friends’ can be done in an instant. Having more ‘friends’ boosts the average person’s self-worth and changes one’s perception of self. Years ago the average person might have 4-5 close friends, while today, people have hundreds of ‘friends’ through social networking. So many are on social networking sites nowadays that if someone isn’t apart of facebook or twitter they are considered abnormal or even suspicious. What we pay attention to in social media influences our views on identity. In order to reconnect with others, we must force ourselves to notice and appreciate our offline selves.
