I have an atom with atomic number 6 and mass number 8. -How many protons does this atom have? -How many electrons does this atom have? -How many neutrons does this atom have?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

The atomic number 6 means it's carbon. If the mass is 8, it's an isotope. The protons will always be 6, as protons can never change, if it changes, it's not even the same element. As for electrons, unless there is a specific charge on the carbon, it should still be 6 electrons, like 6 protons. For the neutrons, subtract the atomic mass by the atomic number. 8-6=2 neutrons
