Geometry Question please help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Eddie wants to create a triangular plot for a garden. He wants to plant 6 feet of irises along one side, 13 feed of daffodils along the second side, and 5 feet of tulips along the third side. Write a convincing argument to show that Eddie’s garden plan is impossible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

terenzreignz and Supreme_Kurt are both me, btw :P Just call me Kurt. Ever heard of something called "Triangle Inequality" ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol ok Captain Kurt!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just Kurt. Triangle inequality. Heard of it? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah? What'd you hear? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I thought it was any side of a triangle that is shorter than the sum of the other two sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is :D Now, if you were to make a triangle with sides 5, 6, and 13, as our demented gardener wants, does this follow the rule of triangle inequality? Is every side shorter than the sum of the two other sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I asked you a question, though :P 5, 6, and 13...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think so. But my first answer for the question was you can't make a triangle with those measurements. Even if you had the 5 foot side and the 6 foot side at a 180 degree angle, the largest the third side could possibly be would be 11 feet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you think about that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right. I'm glad you can visualise the triangle inequality ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that's the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, you got the gist of the answer, namely, that the longest side is longer than the sum of the two other sides. Now all that's left is for you to word that, somehow, and frankly, I don't know how your teacher wants it worded :D Just get straight to the point is my advice :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

She basically wants an explanation for the problem and how it would work and its my last problem on my test and frankly i actually had trouble wording it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well in that case, your answer pretty much nailed it in my most humble opinion :>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you ''Kurt''

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Kurt" D: What's the "" supposed to mean? :|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was just making sure that you knew I was calling you ''Kurt'' not ''Captain Kurt'' Or ''Supreme Pizza Kurt''

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heh. Well, Good luck on your future mathematical endeavours :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey can you help me correct another question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hit me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its closed but I didn't get the answer I was looking for.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tag me.
