OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

A 1,000 pound boat sits on a ramp inclined at 22°. How much force is pulling down the ramp, and how much force is pressing on a line perpendicular to the ramp?

OpenStudy (krazykricket):

That question was already answered by some of our OS team: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/51df4231e4b076f7da41762c

OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

I looked at this but I don't understand how they came up with x = 1000cos(22) The way I see it, it should be x = 1000/cos(22)

OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

But I know I'm wrong

OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

I'm supposed to be using vectors, but how do I know which vector is u and which one is v? A 1,000 pound boat sits on a ramp inclined at 22 deg. How much force is pulling down the ramp, and how much force is pressing on a line pependicular to the ramp? cos22 = vector v over 1000 -> magnitude of v = 1000(cos22) = 1000(.9272) = 927.2 pounds sin22 = vector u over 1000 -> magnitude of u = 1000(sin22) = 1000(.3746) = 374.6 pounds Thus, there is a force of 927.2 pounds acting against the ramp and a force of 374.6 pounds pulling down the ramp.

OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

That's the answer, but I don't know how to get there

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

There is only gravity acting vertically downward : |dw:1424623528459:dw|

OpenStudy (thomas5267):

OpenStudy (calleyleeann):

Normal force is perpendicular to the ramp, right? I need to find that

OpenStudy (thomas5267):

Yes.
