If 8p = 3p + 25, what is the value of p?

OpenStudy (igreen):

Our first step is to subtract 3p to both sides, what's 8p - 3p?

OpenStudy (igreen):

It's the same thing as 8 - 3, but we put a 'p' next to it. So what's 8 - 3? @maria251580639

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{slate}{ 8p = 3p + 25 }\) you know that both sides are the same, and therefore you are allowed to subtract/add some number, OR divide/multiply both sides by some number, as long as you DO THE SAME THING to both sides.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

For example, if I had the following equation (where I need to solve for x) \(\large\color{blue}{ 4x = 2x + 18 }\) THEN, my first step would be to get the X's isolated on one side. In order to do this, I would subtract 2x from both sides. (like this \(\large\color{blue}{ \Downarrow }\)) \(\large\color{blue}{ 4x \color{red}{-2x}= 2x + 18\color{red}{-2x} }\) (Notice how I subtract 2x from BOTH sides, and therefore how I am allowed to do what I did) I get, \(\large\color{blue}{ 2x= 18 }\) I have simplified the equation, didn't I?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So, now, in your situation, (when you have:) \(\large\color{black}{ 8p = 3p + 25 }\) what would you subtract to isolate the X's ?
