Write a rule to describe the translation of ABC to A'B'C'. A:(x,y) >> (x-3,y+4) B:(x,y) >> (x+3,y-4) C:(x,y) >> (x+4,y-3) D:(x,y) >> (x-4,y+3) Posting Pic in chat

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

Sorry i was eating ok im back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, pick one of the points and follow its path, for example from A to A'.

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

2

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it translates to the right -- units, then x will have added -- units and vise versa for the left, x will have subtracted -- units. Sam thing for the y axis, if it went up -- units y will have added -- units and vise versa for if it went down, y will have subtracted -- units. Understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So first of all, pick a point. Let's do A to A'. Did A' travel left or right from the original?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

ok so if its on the right x is gonna be positive? so A and D are knocked out?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now how many unit right did it go? Then ask yourself if it went up or down...

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

so is there something if it goes down and up?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

like if it goes down Y is negitve or something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

left and right are the x values since if it moves left and right it's on the x axis and changing the x values.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

up and down are the y values since if it moves up or down its on the y axis and changing the y values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Make sense?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

so y is negitive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of it as a numberline. If you start at x=3 and subtract 2 you end up at x=1. Or if you start at y=5 and subtract 1 you end up at y=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y is negative

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

i think its C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how many units did it travel to the right?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

this website is getting laggy

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

2 and a half

OpenStudy (anonymous):

each square on your graph equals 2. So if A starts at x=2 and moves to...x=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, it is. :) I'm not just going to give you the answer though. I want to make sure you understand this so you can do other problems that are similar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A is located at x=2 and A' is located at x=5. So it moved 3 units to the right. A is located at y=4 and A' is located at y=0 so it moved 4 units. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 units down, sorry. So using what we know about right and up=positive/addition and left and down=negative/subtraction what would your equation be?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

Kinda its very confusing because it didnt say 1 square = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're right, but if you look at the labels...There are two squares in between the origin and the number 4 and then two squares in between the number 4 and the number 8. You kind of have to use logic and problem solving to figure it out. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand now? What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

I think my brain exploded your tooooo smart

OpenStudy (minecraft40952):

but ya kinda

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's simple, really. Once you get the hang of it it won't seem as impossible, I promise. You just need some more practice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so again, let me recap. A is located at x=2 and A' is located at x=5. So it moved 3 units to the right. A is located at y=4 and A' is located at y=0 so it moved 4 units units. We know that right and up=positive/addition and left and down=negative/subtraction so how do we transfer everything we found out into an equation to get the answer to your question?
