OpenStudy (j.f):

If you draw one of 24 slips of paper numbered from 1–24, what is the probability of drawing a number divisible by 3? P(E)= 3/24?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

What are the numbers divisible by 3, from 1 to 24? You should figure that out

OpenStudy (j.f):

the only numbers divisible by 3 from 1-24 is 1 and 3

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

Well a number divisible by 3 is any number such that when it's divided by 3, doesn't leave a remainder. For example, 12 is divisible by 3, because 12/3 = 4 with no remainder. But, 13 is not divisible by 3, since 13/3 doesn't leave an integer number.

OpenStudy (j.f):

ok, well what is the formula for this. I want to know the formula as well

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

Well 3 is obviously divisible by 3, and then every other number divisible by 3 is a multiple of 3.. so 3n, where n = 1, 2, 3, 4... for example: 3(1) = 3 3(2) = 6 3(3) = 9 ... etc. are all divisible by 3

OpenStudy (j.f):

ok. So how do I find the probability

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

The probability would be: \[ \frac{\text{The number of {numbers divisible by 3}}}{\text{Total number in sample space (i.e. 24)}}\]

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

so basically the numerator.. count how many numbers divisible by 3 you have, and divide by 24

OpenStudy (j.f):

8/24

OpenStudy (j.f):

1/3

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

yeah!
