A fruit vendor has 28 pears and 16 oranges. What is the ratio of oranges to pears in simplest form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@LunyMoony

OpenStudy (inowalst):

28:16

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Can you simplify that?

OpenStudy (idealist10):

16/28=4/7 Answer: 4/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

448

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Don't just give out answers. @Idealist10

OpenStudy (lunymoony):

you just have to find the number that they both can be divided by, so 4 and then you have the answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@LunyMoony i have troubles doing that

OpenStudy (lunymoony):

Alright, no problem, that is why we have OpenStudy

OpenStudy (inowalst):

@TheAsker2002

OpenStudy (inowalst):

First we have 16:28 as our ratio because those are the two numbers we were given. Okay?

OpenStudy (inowalst):

So now we want to simplify that to get to the lowest terms possible.

OpenStudy (inowalst):

We can divide both 16 and 28 by 2, since they are both even numbers, to get 8 and 14.

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Now looking at those two numbers you see that they can still be simplified.

OpenStudy (inowalst):

So why not divide by 2 again. 8 divided by 2 is 4 and 14 divided by 2 is 7. So now we have 4 and 7.

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Since both 4 and 7 are not both, even or odd, we cannot simplify any further. This means that your first ratio of 16:28 is simplified to 4:7.

thanks

You're welcome.
