from here http://testaae.greenwood.com/doc_print.aspx?fileID=GR1862&chapterID=GR1862-142&path=books/greenwood
it says The slaves' journey from their home in Africa to the New World invariably included capture and enslavement in Africa, the trek to the coast where they were sold and detained, boarding and coast-time on the slave ship, the ocean crossing or Middle Passage, disembarkation and sale in the Americas, and then inland travel or a secondary voyage. This trip was followed by a period of adjustment to a new environment—the “seasoning” process, as Caribbean planters sometimes called it.
