OpenStudy (elise_a18):

I'll give a medal to whoever can help me learn radicals. Just adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing radicals. I know all the different parts so there's no need to go over that part

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

You can only add square roots (or radicals) that have the same radicand. The same rule goes for subtracting.

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

The radicand is the number inside the sign

OpenStudy (elise_a18):

So what would I do if the equation is square root 2(5 + square root 8)? there's two different bases

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are two keys to combining radicals by addition or subtraction: look at the index, and look at the radicand. If these are the same, then addition and subtraction are possible. If not, then you cannot combine the two radicals. Making sense of a string of radicals may be difficult. One helpful tip is to think of radicals as variables, and treat them the same way.
