Middle East and South Asia II Unit Test Jon-Thomas Shimabuku is taking this assessment. Multiple Choice 1. Read the following paragraph from "Like the Sun." The incense sticks burnt low. Sekhar's head throbbed with the medley of sounds that had assailed his ear-drums for a couple of hours now. He felt half stupefied. The headmaster had gone nearly hoarse, when he paused to ask, 'Shall I go on?' Sekhar replied, 'Please don't, sir, I think this will do...' The headmaster looked stunned. His face was beaded with perspiration. Sekhar felt the greatest pity for him. But he felt he could not help it. No judge delivering a sentence felt more pained and helpless. Sekhar noticed that the headmaster's wife peeped in from the kitchen, with eager curiosity. The drummer and the violinist put away their burdens with an air of relief. The headmaster removed his spectacles, mopped his brow, and asked, 'Now, come out with your opinion.' After reading these sentences, the reader can most likely conclude that Sekhar feels (1 point) suspicious of his headmaster's intentions. disappointed in his headmaster's singing ability. regret that he endured his headmaster's singing for so long. distressed that he must share the truth with the headmaster. 2. Read the following paragraph from "Wanted: A Town Without a Crazy." So to enter the town with the honor and glory befitting a loony, I had to start with my clothes. First, I went and had an extra long, bright red topcoat made. I smeared it with mud to make it look old and ripped holes in it left and right. Then I went to the flea market and bought piles of worthless old money and bizarre medals. These I pinned here and there on the coat. Around my waist I bound a thick belt and hung a frying pan to one end on a cord. The frying pan was to be my guitar. I hung things all around my belt: a ladle, wooden spoons, a potty, an old electric clock, a women's umbrella, a cast-iron stove lid. Clanging and rattling all over, I boarded a bus. The people on the minibus broke into laughter, so I stood up, and using my frying pan as a guitar, sang all the songs I knew. Laughing and clapping, they were so light-hearted it was indescribable. Some threw oranges for me to eat, others gave me candy, and some money. Not only that, the bus driver not only failed to ask me for fare but invited me to his home: ”Where have you been all this time? Come every day, the food and drinks are on me.” Which of these sentences most effectively summarizes the main ideas in this paragraph? (1 point) The loony impressed the people on the bus by using a frying pan for a guitar and singing songs for them as entertainment. The people of the town were amused by their new loony's unusual appearance and seemed to take delight in his performance on the minibus. In order to become a loony, Helmi purchased new clothes, ripped holes in them, and pinned bizarre medals in all over himself in random order. The loony began his career by purchasing a new coat and tying to it a belt hung with a ladle, wooden spoons, a potty, a clock, a women's umbrella, and an iron stove lid. 3. All of the following quotations from "From Behind the Veil" support the story's main idea about the thrill of forbidden love except (1 point) "A man can be surprised to find himself turning involuntarily towards those figures, wearing long silk gowns, which give them such an enticing and alluring shape, and make the observer yearn to uncover the magic and the secrets which lie beneath them." "They would walk by without turning their heads, paying no attention to the expressions of flattery which came their way from the gallants, who, after getting as much out of them as a dog gets out of barking at clouds, would give them no further attention." "There was nothing to stop her from feasting her eyes on him, however, because she knew that the veil covered her face and concealed the overwhelming attraction she felt for him." "She knew that he was following her, and hastened on her way, trembling with conflicting emotions of joy, fear, and caution." 4. Read the following paragraph from "From Behind the Veil." The features of her face were fine, and inspired the beholder with the strongest feelings of awe and worship. She was fearful and breathless, turning from side to side like a timid gazelle. She knew that what she was doing amounted to an unpardonable crime, but drew comfort from one thing—the knowledge that this boy had not seen her before and did not know her. She was having an adventure, nothing more, and she was drawn into it by her youth and by the warm blood which coursed in her veins. Which word best describes the mood created by these sentences? (1 point) blissful enthralled exhilarated tender 5. Read the following sentence from "Wanted: A Town Without a Crazy." “At this point the loony finished his concert, walked among the tables and after collecting fifty piastres from this one, a lira from that and a "Get outa here!" from others, he left, crestfallen.” Crestfallen most likely means (1 point) disappointed. noisily. overjoyed. quickly. 6. Read the following sentence from "Five Hours to Simla." Ardent most likely means (1 point) accurate. heartfelt. powerful. sudden. 7. Read the following sentence from "Behind the Veil." OpenStudy Code of Conduct OpenStudy is a global learning community - built for you and by you. We ask all members to abide by a few core principles, an OpenStudiers’ pledge if you will. As an OpenStudier, I will: Be Nice–I will stay positive, be friendly, and not meanGive Help, Not Answers–I will encourage and guide those needing help, and not just give them an answerThank Others for Their Help–I will thank people for taking the time and effort to help me Besides the pledge, we also have some specific guidelines on what not to do, outlined below. Failure to follow the guidelines may lead to your suspension or banning from the site. If you see any violations, please report them by using a report abuse link. OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process •Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution. •Have homework problems? We can help you - as long as you are looking to learn how to get your solution (and not just the answer). •Please do not copy and paste your problems. If people are going to spend time to help you, you should at least spend the time to ask your question as clearly as possible. Don't devalue the question/answer process! •Don't provide someone with just the answer - explain the process, and help guide them through understanding the problem. •Don't just provide the answer to a problem when someone else is in the middle of helping! But if you want to help, by all means, join in! Don't spam! Common forms of spam include: •Posting a question multiple times within a short period of time. •Posting a question that is off topic for a particular group (i.e. posting a physics question in the Mathematics group). •Posting a reply that is not relevant to the topic of discussion within that question. •Posting questions that are not, in fact, questions (for example, starting a question in the Mathematics group to wish someone "Happy Birthday"). •Sending the same chat message repeatedly. •Filing false abuse reports on a user repeatedly. Don't be offensive, inappropriate, or creepy! So avoid: •Insulting, berating, or otherwise discouraging others. •Cursing and bypassing the language filters. •Sexual innuendo, or "hitting on people". •Soliciting personal, private, or offline contact information. •Any form of racism, sexism, or any other prejudicial "isms". Don't game the system! Keep medals and achievements valuable, so please avoid: •Participating in "Medal Parties", which are questions specifically designed to inflate the medal count of the users who are participating. •Creating multiple accounts, or colluding with friends to gain unearned medals or achievements. •Artificially inflating your stats in any other way. Keep in mind that OpenStudy is an open, transparent system where everyone can see all your posts, chats, comments, questions and answers. So OpenStudy documents your greatness and your helpfulness. If on the other hand you do not follow our code or post inappropriate content that is creepy, rude, or violates your school's Honor Code, it is also openly viewable. We care about you. So our advice is to be nice and honest. Finally, if you do make a mistake, please be respectful to the moderators. •Moderators are the users whose names are in purple. If you go outside the code of conduct, one of them will likely contact you. If they do, listen to what they have to say and be polite. •If you are issued a temporary suspension because of a Code of Conduct violation, just wait until your suspension is expired. Go read a book, throw a football, unwind, and come back when the suspension is over. •If you create new accounts to bypass a suspension, you will be permanently banned from the site. No questions asked. •If you are permanently banned, or you feel you did not deserve a suspension that you were issued, feel free to email abuse@openstudy.com to discuss your suspension with one of the OpenStudy team members. Welcome! And thank you for being a positive member of OpenStudy.
