in painting people choose acrylic over oil because they like the way it looks. An author will add metaphors to make the work appeal more to his readers and connect a complex feeling to something they would understand. His feet were lead. This sentence connects to the reader helping them understand that the subject is tired and losing the energy to continue on....assuming he doesn't literally have lead feet, that would be unhealthy

i'll take the blame for the sassy remarks, but it was sitting there and i had to pounce notice how i didn't actually pounce. This is a good use of a metaphor to explain to the reader the eagerness I expressed in achieving a witty line.
