OpenStudy (hesan):

what is the next number in the sequence? 1,2,4,16,____

OpenStudy (hesan):

@hartnn @Compassionate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 * 16

OpenStudy (hesan):

@ParthKohli @robtobey

OpenStudy (anonymous):

256

OpenStudy (hesan):

why 16*16 ? @mrfriendlybee

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It first uses 1 * 1, which is 1. Then 2, then 2 * 2, 4, then 4 * 4, 16... see?

OpenStudy (hesan):

1*1 is not equals to 2 therefore this pattern couldn't be apply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but it is using a property of math which I cannot remember... it is starting from the lowest nonzero number; it could be 0, 2, 4, 16 but it would then be against the rules of mathematics.

OpenStudy (hesan):

if it was like 2,4,16,.... then it is obvious that in this series the next number is the square of the previous number. but in this case the series is 1,2,4,16,... . therefore the same formula or can't be apply

Parth (parthkohli):

\(a_1 = 1; ~ ~ ~ a_2 = 2; ~ ~ ~ a_n = (a_{n-1})^2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NOW I see! 1 adds to 1.

Parth (parthkohli):

in other words you are squaring previous terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it adds 2 + 2, then...??? K I'm going 2 leave this to @ParthKohli.
