Can anyone give me some ideas/feedback on a speech I am writing? Pretty please with rainbow cupcakes and cherries on top? <3 ^.^ xD
(Hold on while I post what I've got..) (Also keep in mind that this is going to be an oral speech, so I have to revise it to fit on note cards. 3:
Playing Video Games Has More Benefits than Society Has Previously Concluded \(\bf\color{red}{Please~Give~Suggestions~On~A~New~Title,}\) \(\bf\color{red}{I~Just~Typed~Something~Random.}\) \(\bf\color{blueviolet}{Argument~1:}\) While some may argue that negative effects of gaming include depression and aggression, studies have shown that playing video games can actually benefit gamers in these areas. One study by Oxford University has concluded that playing video games for a short amount of time each day can have a positive impact on child development. In this study, children were asked to quantify how much time they spent gaming on consoles and/or computers throughout a typical school day. They then rated a number of factors, including satisfaction with their lives, how well they got on with peers, how likely they were to help people in difficulty, and levels of hyperactivity and inattention. In comparison to all other groups, including those who did not play video games at all, those who reported under an hour of play each day were those who were most likely to say that they were more satisfied with their lives, and they also showed the highest levels of positive social interactions. This group also reported fewer problems with emotional issues and lower levels of hyperactivity. Simple games that are easy to access and can be played quickly can improve players' moods, promote relaxation and ward off anxiety, the study said. The authors also highlighted the possibility that video games are effective tools for learning resilience in the face of failure. By learning to cope with ongoing failures in games, gamers can build emotional resilience that they can rely upon within their everyday lives. \(\bf\color{blueviolet}{Argument~2:}\) While many may also argue that playing video games make a person intellectually lazy, studies have shown that such play can actually strengthen various cognitive skills such as spatial navigation, reasoning, and memory and perception. These were particularly found to be true for those who engaged in shooter games. A 2013 meta-analysis also found that playing shooter games improves a player's capacity to think about objects in three dimensions just as well as academic courses designed to enhance these same skills. Playing video games may also help children develop problem-solving skills. The more adolescents reported playing strategic video games, such as role-playing games, the more they improved in problem solving and school grades, according to a long-term study published in 2013. Results show that children's creativity was also enhanced by playing any kind of video game, including violent games. Other studies have shown that playing first-person shooter games can lead to increased visuospatial processing and memory abilities. \(\bf\color{blueviolet}{Argument~3:}\) Another stereotype the research challenges is the socially isolated gamer. Research has shown that more than 70 percent of gamers play with a friend, and millions of people worldwide participate in massive virtual worlds through video games such as "World of Warcraft" and "Rift." Multiplayer games often become virtual social communities, where decisions need to be made quickly about whom to trust or reject and how to lead a group. People who engage in video games that encourage cooperation are more likely to be helpful to others while gaming than those who play the same games competitively, a 2011 study found. Being engaged in video games can give gamers a common language, and for someone who is not part of this conversation, this could end up cutting the person off. \(\bf\color{blueviolet}{Conclusion:}\) In conclusion, video games have more benefits than was previously thought.
I skimmed through this, and thought that your argument was well thought out and well put together, Good job! ^.^
But.. is there anything that should be edited or fixed or revised?
@e.mccormick could I get your opinion on this as well? ^.^
I think your argument is really good, I actually don't see any mistakes. :)
Thank you! ^.^ I just need help converting it to an oral speech. .-.
Did you know that video game play has been liked with how good a suegeon someone is? The physical finger dexterity of modern, complex games and controllers has actually helped meficall professionals come in with the skills needed to perform complex, delicate operations with greater reliability.
Hmm, makes sense! Pretty cool what games can do. :3
I think you need a better look at some of the counter arguments. Showing only the good makes people want to search out the bed more. If you ahow some ballance and how the down sides can be addressed can make your argument stronger.
True, thanks for the advice! \(\Large\color{blueviolet}\heartsuit\) ^.^
I think it looks awesome :) Well done :)
Thanks! Any ideas for revisions? I gotta fit this all on little notecards :s
Yet it has to be 5 minutes long :/
Hmm. Write really small and talk really fast? xD Sorry that advice stinks.
Be sure to time yourself a few times and get comfortable with it. People tend to zip through things when nervous or stumble, these make you go short or long. By using a watch with timer you can get some time points on your note cards to see how far ahead or behind you are getting and adjust speed.
Great advice^^ take his advice not mine xD
That's a good idea. ^.^ Question, though.. Any tips on getting rid of nervousness? I failed my last two speeches due to nervousness. :s I'm actually really really shy in person, I hardly ever talk. So it's hard to go in front of the class to speak when I don't even ever raise my hand to comment on anything. o-o
Try printing out a couple of human faces and tape them up on your walls and give the speech in front of them.
Well, being prepared means there is less to worry about. When you chat with friends you are not scared. Why? Because there is no real importance to it. But you might say something embarrasing, but you can recover well with friends. Obviously this does not exist in a speech. To ballance out that familliarity with the people, be really familliar with the topic. Go in practiced and ready. Then, it is just a simple open the mouth and speak.
Hmm, sounds simple enough. Thanks! ^.^
There is absolutely no job on the planet that requires no interpersonal skills. As a minimum you need to talk to your coworkers or boss. So there is some importance in learning public speaking. Any time you want to put forward an idea to a boss, it is public speaking. Look into practicing Emotional Intelligence. Understand how your emotional state will play into things. Then, through practice, work towards surpassing your emotional state. Here is an interesting reference to how this applies in leadership skills: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA15YZlF_kM Using this sort of tactic to prep yourself for emotions in life makes you a better leader and better speaker.
^ Yes, that video has given me a new perspective on how to handle my emotions. :)
