metal and fan if you help all that is needed to identify a substance is the mass and volume of a sample. true or false

An article in the local paper is discussing a new copper mine in New Mexico. It states that all that is needed to identify a substance is the mass and volume of a sample. thats the hole question @dtan5457

do you know it @dtan5457 i really need it
Mass and volume are extrinsic properties - in other words, their values depend on how much of the stuff you have. You can't use either alone to figure out what your substance is. If you have both, however, you can figure out the substance's density. Density is an intrinsic property, meaning it is characteristic of the substance in question, regardless of how much of it you have. It might seem like the answer is true then based on this, but I'm inclined to say false only because different compounds can still have very similar densities (particularly the precious metals). This means knowing the density still doesn't tell you exactly what substance you have, although it might narrow it down to a few.
I would add on to @matt101 's reply and say that for -pure- substances, knowing mass and density is enough to determine the type of substance.
