ECTODERM - the outer layer of cells of a simple animal body. In vertebrates, the layer of cells from which the nervous system and skin develop. ENDODERM - the inner layer of cells of a simple animal body. In vertebrates, the layer of cells from which the linings of the digestive system, lungs, liver and other internal organs develop. MESODERM - the middle layer of cells of a simple animal body. In humans, connective tissue and muscle tissue are formed from the cells of the mesoderm. Other examples- in clams, oysters and snails (mollusks) the mesoderm comes from cells where the ectoderm and endoderm meet. In some other invertebrates and in vertebrates the mesoderm is formed from cells of the endoderm inside the primitive gut.
