what type of symbol is the broken-winged bird in this poem

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

A symbol is an image which suggests or represents something other than itself. In poetry, a symbol represents both what it is, and additionally, a concept or an idea. Sometimes, it is difficult to separate the actual meaning of a symbol from what the symbol represents. The symbol of a white dove suggests "peace" and a lamb often represents "innocence." The "bald eagle" is the national symbol of the USA and the symbol most associated with China is the "dragon". Symbols come in many forms and are not always objects. "Dawn" is used to symbolize "beginning"; "winter" often symbolizes closure or approaching death. Colors are often used in poetry, often changing what they symbolize according to their culture and context. The color red may symbolize carnage and bloodshed in one poem, and happiness and celebration in another. Symbolism surrounds us. We see it in magazines, on outdoor advertising, and in all forms of visual media. Begin to identify symbolism which surrounds you and discover the symbolism in three well known poems shown on the bottom of this page. Reflect on the emotions and the ideas the poems convey through their symbolism. That said, I'll give you one example: Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. What images do you get from that line? Think about what the poet is saying. If you need to, read it several times for you may get several meanings.
