Could someone help me understanding the definition of independent and dependant variables?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

the independent is what changes and the dependent is what you are measuring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if i was doing a science experiment on how plants react to being given different substances, the independant variable wouldnt be the plant?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

no it would be the reaction , how did the plant change to the susbstance?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

did it turn yellow, did it burn, etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the way the plant reacts is the independant variable?

OpenStudy (korosh23):

In an experiment, the independent variable is the variable that is varied or manipulated by the researcher, and the dependent variable is the response that is measured

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

no ,the change that the plant had is the independent variable, what happened to the plant when the substances were added

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt that the same as a reaction?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

ok ok I think I have a perfect example lets say that you want to demonstrate that by mixing pink and blue you get purple the independent variable would be the purple because it changed during the experiment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so that makes sense.. but since i am actually doing an experiment on the plant thing XD im still confused on how i would explain the independent varible (in this case)

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

oh wow xD well a least you got it and with the plant you just have to write if the plant actually changed when you added the susbtance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

directly after i added it? or at the end of the experiment

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

after you added it

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

you are going to write down if it changed, example :the plant burned during the experiment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when it asks, "What is the independant variable?" i say nothing? XD

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

example: the plant turned yellow when added this certain substance

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

well did it change?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i see how that would work.. but im not adding acid or dry ice XD im using orange juice and vinager and stuff XD so it didnt change immediately

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

what changes are the substances

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry i dont understand the question

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

here use this maybe its easier if you are a visual leaner http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/angelacovil/images/506/variables3.jpg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOh so the liquid used is the independant variable

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

YAS!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that makes sense XD

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

haha see you just are a visual learner xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou XD sorry that took me a while XD

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

you are just *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got an * (im on my comuter)

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

yeah because I wrote it wrong so * means fixed xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok as you can see im kind of slow XD im better at talking XD haha! well thankyou so much for helping me out

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

no problem :D
