you can tell that 2 is an outlier

OpenStudy (acxbox22):

what is the mean and what is the median?

OpenStudy (bohotness):

mean i its the middle and mode divde the middle?>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, this question is basically asking you to distinguish the properties of the mean and the median.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The median is "resistant" to outliers because you're just finding out which number is in the middle of the data set. The mean isn't "resistant" to outliers because it's averaging all numbers, including the outliers. So, the first step: are there any outliers in the data set?

OpenStudy (bohotness):

O.O O-O okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If there aren't any outliers, then the median and mean should be relatively equal in describing the center of the data set. If there are, the median would probably be better at describing the center since the outliers would skew the mean. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (bohotness):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so do you think the mean or median be a better measure of the center based on the info?

OpenStudy (bohotness):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry, but I don't see how yes would answer the question...? It was an either/or question.

OpenStudy (bohotness):

thanks i have my answer now xd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok, just making sure :)
