here is what i have so fair The poem "Mending Wall" was Robert Frost's poetic tribute to one man's approach to being a good neighbor. "Mending Wall" was written before World War I when Frost was living in England with his wife and four children, homesick for America. The poem was inspired by Frost's neighbor a few years earlier from New Hampshire, Napoleon Guay. Guay made an impression on Frost during the routine repairs on the wall between their farms by often repeating the phrase, "Good fences make good neighbors." "Good fences" is an intimate barrier, inducing the American pioneer mentality of taking control and staking a claim. Through "Mending Wall," Frost questions that version of the American Dream and indicates at another version. "Mending Wall" emphasizes the freedoms, as well as limitations, of a rural existence.

An influx of industry during the 1900s in America affected and encouraged the production of many works of American literature, this poem included. "The Fog" is written in verse-form and is a pure interpretation of finding beauty in an ordinary, yet hastily changing world. The fog moves silently "on little cat feet" and never stays in one place too long. The fog represents how during this era everything in America was developing and growing, yet it was all happening so brisk that the changes almost seemed as if they appeared overnight. The advancements and expansions spread like wild-fire across America from one city to the next. Frost describes this through to verse, "It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on." The fog is the silently, yet fast moving world Sandburg lives in.
