Determine which consecutive integers do NOT have a real zero of f(x)=x^3-9x^2+23x-14. a. (4,5) b. (-1,0) c. (3,4) d. (0,1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I'd probably test the pair, using the "remainder theorem"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what would i be dividing the equation by??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to plug in each x value one at a time. eg: (4,5) first plug x=4 into x^3-9x^2+23x-14 then plug x=5 into x^3-9x^2+23x-14 if the result from x=4 is positive, and the result from x=5 is negative (or the first is negative and the second is positive) there's a zero in there somewhere.
