Need help finding the sides of an irregular shape.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me a sec to put up the pic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here it is

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Would it be possible to post a .jpg file by screen capture or something? I do not open MS office files.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, hold on for a moment

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Thanks! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does it work now?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, I see it \(very\) well! The 84\(^\circ\) applies to which angle? FGC?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My mistake, it belongs to angle BCD

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I suppose you have more information than just the diagram, for example, do you know angles D,E,A,B,C and F? All of these will change the shape of the figure.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

The best way to solve these problems is to try to draw it with the given information. If you cannot draw it, then some information is missing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, that's why am confused. My teacher posted the answer key. Angle G is 84. side BC is 33.6 side ED is 7.5 and side EF is 12.5. But I don't understand how this is so.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I think he or you forgot some information. Given a figure like that, we cannot assume anything unless we are given, for example, we can\(not\) assume: angle BAD is 45 degrees angle D is 135 degrees lines AE and ED are collinear, angle EFG is 45 degrees, angle FGC is 90 degrees, etc. All this information must be explicitly given when we deal with geometry. Without all this additional information, we cannot correctly give a solution.

Thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will ask for help tomorrow morning about this.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I am sorry, but it doesn't look like I could do more at this point. Perhaps your teacher has assumed or indicated certain other information that you might find tomorrow. Good luck!
