In three or four paragraphs, compare and contrast the irony of Nichole's reasons for lying to the court about the accident to another well-known character who lies that you have encountered in literature. Which of these characters had a better reason to lie: your character or Nichole? Which of these characters got the outcome they hoped for when they told the lie? What does the irony in each story say about the nature of truth and lies?
the Sweet Hereafter
im confused on the situation and I didnt have time to finish the book
Sorry nobody is going to write your essay for you, do your own work if you want to pass. I can help but thats it
i know I was asking why her reason was to lie i dont need you to do the whole thing
Her father was abusing her correct
Answers will vary. (I used Elizabeth Proctor from The Crucible for the sample essay) Nichole in The Sweet Hereafter lies to the court by claiming that she remembers the bus driver speeding and that this was the cause of the accident. She lies to get revenge on her father for abusing her. Her lie is ironic because her selfish act of revenge has her cast as the town hero. When she lies, she ostensibly ends the legal proceedings that are splitting the town. Unfortunately, her act of revenge also casts the blame on the one person who suffered from guilt over the accident. In contrast, Elizabeth in The Crucible lies to save her husband. She lies to protect his secret and his honor. Elizabeth is selfless in her lie, but the irony is that the lie condemns her husband, rather than protecting him. Nichole and Elizabeth are similar in many ways. Both women are considered trustworthy and honorable despite the fact that they lie. Both lies inadvertently hurt others but unexpectedly redeem them too. Elizabeth is more justified in her lie because she is protecting someone else. Nichole, on the other hand, is driven to lie by vengeance. She is justified in her drive, but selfish none the less. In addition, Elizabeth does not get what she wants or expects from her lie, but Nichole is in complete control. She defeats her father and restores her identity. Helping the town and becoming a hero is icing on the cake for Nichole. In The Sweet Hereafter, the idea of lies and truth is tied to a theme about blame. The characters desperately need someone to blame for the bus accident so they can make sense of the tragedy. Nichole's lie frees the town by casting blame on the one person who is eager to take it. Ironically, at the end of the story even Dolores is saved by the lie because it allows her to make her guilt public and forgive herself for what happened. Of course, the town is forever living in the sweet hereafter, but they can move forward in a way. The only one who remains among the living dead is Billy Ansel, who ironically is the only one who knows the truth. The truth is not the path to freedom for him. In The Crucible the truth is immaterial, because the court and the law are operating under a lie. They demand lies to free the jailed and convicted people, but they hold tight to the truth. Only Elizabeth lies to try to save her husband, but because the lie is righteous it is useless in the face of evil. In contrast to the message of The Sweet Hereafter, the message of The Crucible is that the truth may not lead to freedom but it is the key to salvation.
thats what I got
First just make up a character and there lie and compare it to Nicole's lie. Example: Jason lied about who broke the TV and blamed it on his brother; His brother got grounded for a month. Your going to compare Jason's lie to Nicole's lie.
Nicole's lie was that she lies to the court by claiming that she remembers the bus driver speeding and that this was the cause of the accident. She lies to get revenge on her father for abusing her. Her lie is ironic because her selfish act of revenge has her cast as the town hero. When she lies, she ostensibly ends the legal proceedings that are splitting the town. Unfortunately, her act of revenge also casts the blame on the one person who suffered from guilt over the accident.
thank you
