Do you see why the height of the triangle is 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The triangle is isosceles, and you're told that one of the angles (specifically, the one opposite the hypotenuse) is a right angle (\(90^\circ\)). This means the other two angles must each be \(45^\circ\). The y-axis bisects the right angle, so the half of the larger triangle that lies in the first quadrant (on the side of the positive x-axis) is similar, and also a \(45^\circ-45^\circ-90^\circ\) triangle, with legs of length 1 and hypotenuse \(\sqrt2\). |dw:1428356613294:dw|
