Need help understanding this equations , its chemistry but the equations is an algerbraic word problem

OpenStudy (matlee):

If I have 340 mL of a 0.5 M NaBr solution, what will the concentration be if I add 560 mL more water to it? (340 ml)(0.5 M) = (900 ml)(Mf); Mf = 0.2 M

OpenStudy (matlee):

Hi amistre

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hi

OpenStudy (matlee):

That day that you hlelped me the openstudy wouldnt letm e connect

OpenStudy (matlee):

But thanks anyways

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i vaguely recall doing something like that :)

OpenStudy (matlee):

ahaha

OpenStudy (matlee):

Reffering to the last joke u told me i could tell that was coming

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what joke? :) im not a chemist, how do we detemrine concentration?

OpenStudy (matlee):

The formula is c1 x v1 = c1 + v2 the answer is there i just dont udnerstand how to get it

OpenStudy (matlee):

Maybe not a joke but waiting a few seconds is not wise for a age like me

OpenStudy (matlee):

sorry its c1 x v1 = c2 x v2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats better, the + just didnt look right so, we aint messing with adding more NaBr, just increasing volume

OpenStudy (matlee):

yes but here it says he adds water

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok well i mean it says 340 x .5 = 900 x .2 but i dont think thats right

OpenStudy (amistre64):

concentration is moles per liter it looks like. its a ratio of the moles of a substance compared to the volume that its dissolved in

OpenStudy (matlee):

Yes, im pretty sure thats right

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if I have 340 mL of a 0.5 M NaBr solution, .5 moles/340mL what will the concentration be if I add 560 mL more water to it? .5moles/(340+560)mL

OpenStudy (matlee):

M=1m/l i think is the equation

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://www.ausetute.com.au/concsols.html

OpenStudy (matlee):

Oh!!!

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok thanks so it would be 1700? for 340/.5

OpenStudy (matlee):

my bad 680

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok i understand it now thank you

OpenStudy (matlee):

So the left side will equal the right side?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i havent determined your c1*v1 = c2*v2 the proportions are not equal so the results will not match you are not maintaining an equal concentration, but are diluting the substance. its ratio to the volume will decrease. spose i stick you in a room with 3 beach balls, the current concentration of you to beach balls is 1/3 if i add 9997 beach balls, the concentration of you to beach balls is: 1/10000 which is a much smaller ratio.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

other than that, im not real sure wht else is going on in the question

OpenStudy (matlee):

Haha ok thanks. that actually helped a bit i will continue my adventure for this equation

OpenStudy (matlee):

or maybe i can just head to the chemistry section

OpenStudy (amistre64):

very well then :) good luck on the journey.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you find out that they said the same thing as me .. let me know :)

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok sure i will

OpenStudy (matlee):

Bye!
