OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

How does the potential energy of the reactants compare to the potential energy of the products in an exothermic reaction, and where does the energy that is given off come from

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Do you understand what potential energy, \(U\) is?

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yes, I would think that the potential energy of the reactants would be greater than the potential energy of the products, but I'm not completely sure.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Since energy is given off (exothermic), the products are lower in energy than the reactants. the new bonds forming is what the resulting energy is coming from.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Thanks! :)
