If Willie runs 5 miles in 25 minutes, we can calculate his speed by time divide distance, as shown below \[s=\frac{t}{d}\] We can apply this to our question \[s=\frac{25}{5}=5min/mile\] What this means is that every 5 minutes he runs 1 mile. We can apply this to the question, how many miles can he run in 40 minutes. Well, using the same formula just rearranged: \[d=\frac{t}{s}\] \[d=\frac{40}{5}\] \[d=8\] This means he can run 8 miles in 40 minutes, if he can run 5 miles in 25 minutes.
