This question may be a bit confusing but ill try my best to explain it. 0.5 * (x) * (x+2) = 40 X= 8 X + 2 = 10 How does it add up to 40?

or to be more clear 0.5 multiplied by 8 multiplied by 8 and added by 2 = 40

well .5 means 1/2 and 8*10 = 80 what is 80/2 ?

well, unless youve covered quadratic forms, then theres prolly not much that can be said about it. you wondering how to multiply has me thinking tat quadratic forms may not be in your repetiore just yet.

im not being rude, im making an observation. the conversation really hasnt lead any support otherwise. but if youve covered quadratic forms then you may consider the quadratic formula for a solution.

distribute the .5x over x+2, subtract the 40, and you will be set up as: ax^2 + bx + c = 0 the quadratic formula gives us x as: \[x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\]

you can also consider factoring ax^2+bx+c
